The first of August is here, and I’m in a strange state of limbo at the moment. The kids finished school and college way back on June 18th. We’ve spent time at the allotment. We’ve been to Zakynthos, had an 18th birthday and party (with homegrown flowers). We’ve had a brilliant summer, and yet, it’s only the beginning of August, and we still have travel plans in our back pocket! I almost feel ready for the routine to return. That feeling you get when the kids go back to school is a little sad, but you’re prepared for the familiarity, at least that’s what it feels like for me. Except…this time we don’t have a plan, onward education isn’t quite finalised just yet as we await A-level and GCSE results!

Being self-employed, it’s taken all of my willpower to get up at a reasonable hour and make it to my desk, so a new routine is in order, if only a temporary one. A routine that combines a healthy amount of work at my desk and work at the plot – there’s much to be done!

So, without further ado, here are the plot plans for August. Some are August jobs, others I can stretch out over the autumn – we’ll see!

Sow the following:

Lettuce
Raddish
Spinach
Spring onions
Spring cabbage
Overwintering onions
Turnips
Beetroot
Carrots

I’ve been gifted a substantial amount of logs and branches, so the plan is to make the compost bays of dreams with those.

Harvesting and preserving, that’s an entire month’s worth of jobs all by itself. I’m so thankful that, despite the dry weather, most crops have done very well and seem to have enjoyed the heat. I’m particularly excited about the first decent harvest of Jalapeños!

I’ll share as usual as I go along on Instagram @sarah.diggingtheearth.org.uk, say hello and show me what you’ve been up to!

Sarah.
