June is the month when the allotment comes alive. After spring’s frantic sowing and planting, we can start to enjoy the rewards of our hard work. The days are long, the weeds are enthusiastic, and the first proper harvests of the season are ready to lift our spirits. The excitement is always there!
Here’s my guide to what to sow, grow, harvest, and enjoy this month.
What to Sow in June
It’s not too late to keep the rhythm going with successional sowings. Try these:
- Carrots and beetroot – choose fast-maturing varieties for later summer harvests
- French beans and dwarf beans – sow direct for a second wave
- Lettuce, radish and spring onions – keep sowing little and often
- Kale, chard and perpetual spinach – reliable for late summer and autumn use
- Herbs – basil, coriander and dill all thrive now

Jobs to Tackle This Month
- Water wisely – early morning or evening, and aim at the roots
- Mulch – conserve moisture and suppress weeds around thirsty crops
- Support climbers – tie in sweet peas, cucumbers and tomatoes
- Feed fruiting plants – tomatoes, courgettes and strawberries love a fortnightly feed
- Harvest regularly – the more you pick, the more you get
What You Might Be Harvesting
- Broad beans
- Strawberries
- Early potatoes
- Lettuce, radish and rocket
- Garlic (if leaves are yellowing and falling over)
Pause and take it in. I love the colours, scents and sounds of June. Sitting with a cuppa, listening to the bees, or admiring how a pea tendril curls can reset your whole mindset.

If you’re away or overwhelmed, don’t worry. Even a few minutes here and there this month will pay off later in the season. And if it’s all got away from you, start again. June is forgiving like that!
